Communication during an emergency situation is one of the first things that should be on your checklist, so I wanted to review the best survival communication equipment to help you out.
Because I’m a husband and father, I am passionate about emergency preparedness, survival and most importantly emergency radio.
Being prepared for an emergency should be a top priority for anyone. Therefore, with this page I’d like to help you with one aspect of survival, communication.
During an emergency, communication is a top priority. You’ll need to know what’s going on in your country, community, and within your neighborhood.
Has the storm passed? Is it safe to go out? What location can we meet at? What if you are separated from your family? How would you contact them?
Should you meet at the survival tent shelter or the river?
The questions and situations are endless.
Due to all those questions listed above, we need to look into this topic more in-depth.
You’re probably thinking about your cell phones, right? Seems like that’s all you’d need.
Now, Imagine a tornado taking down the phone lines and cell towers.
What about the government temporarily taking down cell phone communication? How are you going to communicate if something like that happens?
What if you are out camping somewhere on vacation and some sort of threat arises? Do you have a way to get information without your cell phone? Can you get help if you need it?
These are just some of the questions I have when thinking about communication during an emergency situation, and it’s something we should all think about. Being prepared is smart because it can save your life and the lives of your family.
So, below you’ll find different options for emergency communication equipment, and I’ll tell you a little about each type so that you can make a more educated decision.
Types Of Survival Communication Equipment
A Little About Each One
Survival or Emergency Communication Equipment comes in two categories, those where you can hear information and also those where you can communicate with others, and both are important.
Which of these you choose in each category depends on what situation you’d need it in, your preferences, and your budget.
HAM Radio – This is what preppers have told me is the most secure form of communications.
Emergency Weather Radios – Great for finding out the weather and hearing emergency broadcasts.
CB Radios – Short range communication. Popular with truckers.
Emergency Radio Scanners – Scans multiple radio channels at once enabling you to keep up with emergency information.
Emergency Satellite Phone – Phone that works anywhere.
2 Way Radios – Great for communication short distances with friends, family, or neighbors.

The Most Secure Form of Survival Communications
I asked the prepping community what the best emergency communications product was and they told me hands down HAM radio. What is HAM radio?
It is amateur radio right from your own home! Operators are called HAMS that work with communications equipment. You have to get an FCC license to use it.
The great thing about it is that you can communicate from anywhere you want. You can take the test and get your license for around $40. It’s also relatively cheap to get started with equipment.
I’ve given you a few choices below which I found to be very adequate.
Emergency Weather Radios
Find the best emergency weather radio.
Weather radios are for you to hear weather reports and emergency broadcasts. They air normal and emergency weather information, and they also report natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or amber alerts.
Having one of these in addition to a regular radio is great for emergencies because they automatically tune to the weather band and you won’t miss an important announcement.
Knowing ahead of time about an emergency improves your chances of survival in any situation. Below are some great options for weather radios. Some of them even have hand cranks so that they won’t need electricity or batteries.
What is the best CB Radio For Sale?
CB radios have been around for a long time and really became popular in the 1970′s and 1980′s. Everyone back then would use them to chat with friends or truckers going through town.
Hunters used them to communicate with other hunters while running deer as well. Remember, this was back before cell phones.
CB radios are considered short range communications and lots of truckers still use them. Many of them have multiple NOAA channels and have a number of channels to communicate on.
Most people know truckers use them, but fail to understand how they could be useful during an emergency. If cell phone service was down, wouldn’t this be the next best thing?

Emergency Radio Scanners
Explore The best emergency radio scanners
Scanners are nice because you can “scan” many communications channels to know what’s going on. This is especially great during a severe weather event or man made disaster.
You can monitor fire departments, emergency dispatchers, and other important emergency communication taking place in your area.
Most of these come with the scanner, antenna, ac adapter, car power adapter and a bracket. If you want to know which emergencies are being attended to in your area then you’ll want to pick up one of these.
Emergency Satellite Phone
The best emergency phone!
In many disasters whether they be natural or man made the possibility and likely chance of land line communications and cell phone communications a reality.
It can be quite stressful not being able to communicate to loved ones or for help when the typical phone doesn’t work. This is where a satelite phone comes in handy.
These phones work anywhere in the world you are and in any condition. Many of them come with a solar charger as well so you don’t need a typical power source.
2 Way Radios
Shop the best 2 way radios.
During any emergency two way radios are excellent for communicating with family, with group members, or with neighbors.
Consequently, these are high powered walkie talkies. These are also great when camping or when outdoors where cell phone service is shody.
Things to consider are power, range, number of channels and batteries. Most of the units below are Family Radio Service (FRS) so you don’t need a license.
I would suggest the highest range within your budget because in an extreme situation you don’t want to be limited. This could be your only method of communication temporarily.
